Josh Braunreuther is an Emmy-nominated Director of Photography with over a decade of experience in film and television.
Josh launched his career as a Photojournalist at WCIV in Charleston, SC, where his work earned multiple awards from the National Press Photographers Association. This background in journalism laid a strong foundation for his diverse and dynamic filmmaking career.
DOCUMENTARY:
In 2017, Josh began working with the Academy Award-winning team at Orwell Productions, serving as a Camera Operator on Icarus, which won Best Documentary at the 2018 Academy Awards; The Dissident, which won Best Documentary at the 2021 Writers Guild of America Awards and was nominated for the Best Documentary BAFTA; and Icarus: The Aftermath, which premiered at the 2022 Telluride Film Festival.
In 2021, Josh took on his first feature-length documentary as Director of Photography, relocating to Tbilisi, Georgia, for six months to film war refugees living in the abandoned sanatoriums of Tskaltubo. This project, titled On the Way Home, premiered at the 2024 Slamdance Film Festival and won the Charles E. Guggenheim Emerging Artist Award at Full Frame Doc Fest the same year.
Since 2015, Josh has also filmed feature documentary content for various sports networks, including WWE, ESPN, Fox Sports, MLB, and NFL Films. Most notably, he served as the Director of Photography on UnderTaker: The Longest Ride and the Emmy-nominated Woooooo! Becoming Ric Flair.
COMMERCIAL:
In addition to his documentary work, Josh entered the commercial world in 2017 through his involvement with Warner Bros.’ award-winning branded content studio, Courageous Studios. This opportunity allowed him to travel the world, shooting for global brands such as BMW (Germany/England), GE (Oman/Dubai), Roberto Coin (Italy), and Fairmont Hotels (Banff, Canada). He has also worked on high-profile campaigns for Marc Jacobs, Krug Champagne, and Veuve Clicquot.
NARRATIVE:
In recent years, Josh has expanded into narrative filmmaking through collaborations with Seamless Pictures. For these projects, he worked as a Camera Operator on Robbie Ain’t Right No More (2023), which was selected for the Tribeca Film Festival, and Cupcake (2022), which screened at the Horrorhound Film Festival. Additionally, he was the 2nd Unit Director of Photography on The Manager Position (2022), which was selected for the Hollyshorts Film Festival, and Silver Anniversary, which is currently in post-production.
